Academics – Academics Rule Changes for 2009-2010

The following changes have been approved by the UIL Legislative Council and Texas Commissioner of Education and take effect for the 2009-2010 school year. Refer to the Constitution & Contest Rules for official wording.

HIGH SCHOOL

  • The hands-on programming team component in computer science is now part of the district meet competition.

  • Points for team computer science are now awarded at the district meet.

  • Maximum number of individuals who may serve as One-Act Play crew members is increased from four to five.

  • All extemporaneous speaking rounds in UIL competition shall be open to the public.

  • Second and third alternates shall be determined in Lincoln-Douglas debate for advancement purposes only, but shall receive no points, ranks or medals.

  • Preparation time in Lincoln-Douglas debate has been increased from three to four minutes.

  • In the Academic State Meet finals only, a contestant in Prose or Poetry whose performance exceeds seven minutes will be ranked last in the round, and shall not be disqualified.

MIDDLE SCHOOL/JUNIOR HIGH

  • Contestants may use computers in Ready Writing.
