| Duncanville HS & Churchill HS Scoring |
The score breaking procedure at the State Marching Band AAAAA finals produced an anomaly that I have not seen in my years as State Director of Music. The procedure we used was as follows.
In viewing the rankings of the 5 judges, Judge 1 and Judge 4 had Reagan ranked the highest of the three tied bands. Judge 3 and Judge 5 had Duncanville ranked the highest. Judge 2 had Churchill ranked highest.
Thus Reagan and Duncanville were ranked highest by two judges each. Then by factoring in the ranking of Judge 2 to break the tie, Duncanville ranked highest. Thus, Duncanville was awarded the Third Place in the contest.
This procedure has been used since it was approved by the UIL State Executive Committee in the early 1990’s and has always yielded consistent results.
However, in this circumstance a further review of the scoring by isolating the rankings of the three bands in question does not produce the same result. When the rankings of the three bands are isolated the result is as follows.
| Band |
Judge 1 |
Judge 2 |
Judge 3 |
Judge 4 |
Judge 5 |
Total |
| Duncanville |

Applying this procedure Churchill becomes the 3rd place winner.
Let me stress that the procedure used at the contest was consistent with the procedure used for all previous 3-way tie breakers and was consistent with procedures approved by the UIL State Executive Committee. However it is clear that in this unique case the application of the two procedures detailed above do not give consistent results.
Therefore, in fairness to all competing bands it has been determined that Co-Third Place Trophies and Bronze Medals will be awarded to both the Duncanville and Churchill Bands.
