Mariachi Events

UIL Medium Ensembles

Mariachi medium ensembles will compete in one of the following categories:

 

(1) Traditional Mariachi (900) conforms to traditional mariachi instrumentation and part distribution.

(A) Instrumentation. The ensemble will consist of a minimum of 11 and a maximum of 17 performers which includes:

Violins – maximum 2 per part including Violin 1, Violin 2, Violin 3.  Violin 4 is optional.

Trumpets – 1 per part including Trumpet 1, Trumpet 2.  Trumpet 3 and Trumpet 4 are optional. (No doubling of parts)

Armonia – Minimum for rhythm section is 1 Vihuela, 1 Guitarron and Guitar(s). Guitarra de Golpe and Harp are optional.

Vocals – All vocalists will be instrumentalists performing in the ensemble, with a maximum of 2 per part.

(B) Performance RegulationsPerformance time for a medium ensemble shall be limited to not more than 15 minutes, including performance, entering and clearing the performance area.  Ensembles must perform two selections in contrasting style.  All selected repertoire should be of UIL Class I level.

(C) Scores.  Each director of a medium ensemble shall provide the judge with a comprehensive, readable score (suitable for adjudicated performances) for each selection being performed.  The score(s) are to be published or computer generated with measures numbered.

(2) Experimental Ensemble (910) demonstrates the mariachi performance tradition but with no requirements in terms of instrumentation and/or part distribution.

(A) InstrumentationThe ensemble will consist of a minimum of 11 and a maximum of 17 performers that includes any combination of traditional and non-traditional mariachi instruments and vocalists.  Instrumentation must include Guitarron and Vihuela.

(B) Performance RegulationsPerformance time for a medium ensemble shall be limited to not more than 15 minutes, including performance, entering and clearing the performance area.  Ensembles must perform two selection of contrasting style. All selected repertoire should be of UIL Class I level.

(C) Scores.  Each director of a medium ensemble shall provide the judge with a comprehensive, readable score (suitable for adjudicated performances) for each selection being performed.  The score(s) are to be published or computer generated with measures numbered.


Adjudication

All medium ensemble judges must be selected from the recommended list or supplemental list of approved judges.
