Requirements

All TILF scholarship applicants must meet these five requirements:

  1. Compete in one of the UIL Academic State Meet Contests (applicants must have competed on the state level of competition), including: Accounting, Calculator Applications, Computer Applications, Computer Science, Current Issues and Events, Debate (Cross-Examination* and Lincoln-Douglas), Journalism (Editorial Writing, Feature Writing, Headline Writing and News Writing), Literary Criticism, Mathematics, Number Sense, One-Act Play, Ready Writing, Science, Social Studies, Speech (Prose Interpretation, Poetry Interpretation, Informative Speaking and Persuasive Speaking) and Spelling & Vocabulary.

Special Note: *Only Cross-Examination Debate State Meet competitors advancing to the second day elimination rounds as one of the top 16 teams may apply. Do not list first day CX competition on page one of the application.

  2. Submit high school transcript including verified ACT and SAT scores, verified rank in graduating class and size of graduating class. Transcript should be complete through mid-year of the senior year and include the seven semester high school grade point average converted to a 0-100 scale in decimal form. Additional six weeks grade reports are appreciated. School may place materials in a sealed envelope, if desired, but send all materials together.

  3. Submit a completed application and parents’ IRS 1040 forms, pages one and two only, to the League office between April 1 - May 6, 2008.

  4. Graduate from high school during the current year and begin college or university in Texas by the following fall semester.

  5. Attend an accredited college or university in Texas, take a 12 hour per term minimum course load, and maintain a minimum 2.5 grade point average. Some donors require a higher GPA and more hours per term.

Each applicant should read the announcements carefully, noting special requirements or restrictions for each award. Some require students to have competed in certain contests, select certain majors and/or attend specific schools. A donor may require additional paperwork to be submitted from their recipient.

Students should complete only one application listing the top two scholarships they wish to apply for in order of preference. Students who are not selected for either their first or second choice for a scholarship will be considered for all other scholarships they are qualified to receive. Higher values scholarships are selected first, so to be considered for them they should be listed first.

Students who competed in past State Meets as underclassmen and who are now graduating may also apply.

Each school administrator should read the Leaguer. Additional awards are made available from time to time and are announced in the Leaguer.

Announcements to all applicants and their high school principals will be mailed by the end of June.

No announcements will be made by telephone prior to the first week of July.
